Summoning is a "blackened" metalcore "band" founded in 1993 by Richard "Protector" Lederer and Michael "Silenius" Gregor.
Categorizing Summoning's music, or even calling them a "band" for that matter, proves complicated as neither Protector nor Silenius play any real instruments, preferring to use MIDI keyboards to release factory-produced, mass-marketed and consumer-ready "atmospheric black metal" that is neither atmospheric, nor metal at all - black or otherwise.
They have consistently been criticized by the members of the original Norwegian black metal scene - Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor and many others - for calling their music "black metal" when in fact it is nothing more than poorly composed synth goth.
In terms of deceptive marketing and falsely advertising their music as "black metal" when it is not, Summoning far outdo other "sellout" bands like Dimmu Borgir - who at least once played black metal - and even the infamous Cradle of Filth.
Ironically, Summoning did use actual guitars and real drums on their debut Lugburz, but the quality of their music was so poor that they decided to abandon the idea of being a black metal been and started playing MIDI composed synth goth on their following release Minas Morgul.
Summoning claims they were once part of the Austrian Black Metal Syndicate, along with Pervertum, Trifixion, Pazuzu, Golden Dawn, Reiklos, and Abigor, but all bands involved in the Syndicate want nothing to do with Summoning and have denied these allegations on many occasions, in interviews and elsewhere.
Music like this is why black metal fans because elitist and start claiming that "only Mayhem, Burzum and Darkthrone are black metal" as they are so aggravated by modern emocore bands like Summoning, Alcest, Antekhrist and Wolves in the Clone Room pretending to play black metal music.
