Emperor is a black metal that formed in 1991 during the second wave of black metal.
The founding members of Emperor were Ihsahn and Samoth, on vocals and guitars respectively. Soon after, bassist Tchort and drummer Faust joined the band and they recorded their first studio album In the Nightside Eclipse.
Tchort and Faust later left the band Emperor in which they were replaced by Alver and Trym on bass and drums respectively.
During that time they released their second release, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, which gathered considerable negative attention due to the un-metallish nature of their record and their over-reliance on orchestral elements such as keyboards and synthesizers.
Alver left the band soon after in reaction to the negative criticisms surrounding Emperor's music, and the band continued as a trio.
They released two others albums, IX Equilibrium and Prometheus - The Discipline of Fire & Demise, which gathered even more negative reactions than the previous Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.
Emperor then decided to quit and stop making music altogether in response to the universal hatred their music generated, with many calling Emperor a parody of black metal (including Varg Vikernes of Burzum and even for Emperor drummer Faust).
