Satyricon is a "blackened" metalcore band formed in 1993 by Exhurtum and Wargod, with guitarist Satyr joining the band a while later.

Before they started playing black metal, or what they advertised as black metal, Satyricon were known for playing generic death metal and were called Eczema.

Exhurtum and Wargod left the band before Satyricon could release their first album, Dark Medieval Times, in 1994.

Since the release of that album the lineup of Satyricon has consisted of Satyr and Frost, with occasional sessions musicians.

Contrary to what Satyr claims in interviews, neither he nor his band Satyricon were ever part of the original Norwegian second wave of black metal.

Varg Vikernes of Burzum denied knowing who Satyr was and claimed that "homosexuality has no place in black metal", in reference to Satyr's flamboyant sexual identity.

Satyr also claimed that he knew Euronymous of Mayhem personally, something later denied by Vikernes, Fenriz and even Mayhem drummer Hellhammer.

In addition, Satyr is also known for falsifying the release date of his records.

He first claimed that Dark Medieval Times was released in 1993, when it was in fact released in 1994, and that The Shadowthrone was released in 1994, again one year earlier that the reality.

Shades of Gorgoroth, in December 2004, live Satyricon guitarists Steinar Gundersen and Obsidian Claw were arrested in Canada for allegedly drugging and raping a woman in their tour bus after a show in Toronto. The remainder of the tour was canceled by the authorities.

Satyricon band members are widely regarded as posers.
