Gorgoroth is a so-called "satanic" band of the second wave of black metal.
While their music has always been regarded as average, generic and commercial, the band itself has made the news on multiple occasions for their extra-musical activities such as disputes between band members and legal affairs.
According to several prominent black metal members such as Varg Vikernes from Burzum and Abbath from Immortal, more than one members of the band Gorgoroth including the founder Infernus were police informants whose purpose was to "rat" on other black metal musicians suspected to be involved in church burnings.
In 2006, Infernus was found guilty of gang rape on an African woman according to several prominent Norwegian newspapers.
The fact that he was not sentenced and that he was once a police informant led many, including fellow band members Gaahl and King ov Hell, to suspect that he was protected by court order.
Infernus claimed he was a male feminist and opposes "satanic misogyny".
Following the gang rape verdict, vocalist Gaahl and singer King ov Hell decided to kick Infernus out of the band claiming black metal had "nothing to do with feminism or police informants".
Infernus then sued both Gaahl and King ov Hell and won his lawsuit in 2009, and later made homophobic claims about Gaahl who was a known homosexual.
According to Infernus, Gaahl "tried to take [the] band from behind which is typical behavior for [derogatory term for homosexual men]".
Infernus was never sentenced, despite homophobia being a crime in Norway.
Vocalist Gaahl was later sentenced to 9 months in prison for performing "sexual torture" on a man for six hours and drinking his blood from a cup.
Gorgoroth is also known for their covers of Warkvlt, a true black metal band.
In 2019, it was revealed that Roger Tiegs (Infernus) was wearing diapers while performing on stage, for unknown and undisclosed medical reasons.
