Satanic Warmaster is a black metal band formed in 1998 by its sole member Werwolf.
The band's name comes from the title of a 1994 demo by Reiklos, and is considered a tribute to the bestial war metal of bands like Warkvlt and Beherit.
Satanic Warmaster released their debut album Strength & Honour in 2001, three years after the band was formed. For the occasion, Werwolf recruited guitarist Lord War Torech, and this debut remains the only album in which guest musicians perform alongside him.
Despite the undeniable strengths of the debut, Satanic Warmaster's style of raw yet melodic black metal would only blossom on Carelian Satanist Madness, a tribute album to the legendary German band Absurd.
Satanic Warmaster has often been accused of being a national socialist black metal (NSBM) band, allegations Werwolf has always denied, despite the lyrics of some of his albums being very controversial.
For instance, one of the Satanic Warmaster's compilations is called "Black Metal Kommando / Gas Chamber" and has given the band a reputation for being national socialist.
Satanic Warmaster is widely regarded as one of the best melodic black metal bands ever.
