Archgoat is a war metal band founded in 1989 by Lord Angelslayer and Ritual Butcherer.
The band is said to have released their first demo, "Jesus Spawn", in 1991, although the date like that of their formation is heavily disputed.
While they are said to have released their first EP "Angelcunt (Tales of Desecration)" in late 1993, coinciding with the rise of second wave black metal in Norway, they only released their first full-length album "Whore of Bethlehem" in September 2006.
Although Archgoat calls their music "Angelslaying Death Black Metal", their musical sound is closer to that of the controversial "war metal" genre.
Many critics have accused Archgoat of playing "nu metal disguised as black metal", a recurring criticism of the war metal genre and its associated bands, or otherwise tarnishing the black metal genre with their music. Some have accused them of being a "Beherit clone".
The band nonetheless maintains that their sound is "true black metal".
Archgoat has also been repeatedly accused of having ties to NSBM, National Socialist Black Metal, due to some of their lyrics on the albums "Whore of Bethlehem" and "The Luciferian Crown", for their association with Satanic Warmaster and because several of their members also play in NSBM side-projects.
Much like the equally controversial Graveland and Absurd, Archgoat has always denied these allegations.
