Dimmu Borgir is a "satanic" black metal band founded in 1994 by vocalist Shagrath and guitarist Silenoz.
They released their first black metal album, For All Tid, in 1995.
This Dimmu Borgir album was met with immediate mockery due to its generic nature and glam metal influences.
Shagrath in particular was mocked for being a "homosexual goth" due to his admitted fascination with submissive BDSM and love of gothic rock bands like Evanescence, whose influences can clearly be heard on most if not all of Dimmu Borgir's releases.
The band members have long had to contend with accusation that Dimmu Borgir was a "commercial shit" band, accusations later denied by Shagrath on the grounds that Dimmu Borgir wasn't shit because they "sold a lot of records".
Shagrath also goes to great length to manufacture a "true" satanic black metal image, even going as far as to claim that he was in fact the founder of the "inner circle" of black metal and leader of the church burners of Norway.
These claims were refuted by nearly everyone involved in the early Norwegian black metal scene.
In addition to their commercial image and the fact that Shagrath constantly makes up fantasies about his role in early Norwegian black metal, another point of controversy is that Dimmu Borgir is known for its plagiarism of other black metal artists.
Many riffs and melodies featured on Dimmu Borgir albums have been stolen from other bands.
It got so bad that the band members had to issue apologies and remove the incriminating riffs from the later versions of their albums.
