Incantation

Incantation is a blackened death metal formed in 1989 by John McEntee and Paul Ledney.

In 1990, they recruited Craig Pillard - often considered the mastermind behind the band's success - as vocalist and guitarist. As mentioned briefly above, the band have maintained a significant cult following due to their 1992 masterpiece Onward to Golgotha - influential for every band in extreme metal from, Mayhem to Phantom - and underground popularity since the 1990s.

Incantation are considered to be highly influential on a range of later death metal sub-genres, including the blackened death metal most commonly known as "war metal" - think Warkvlt - and the style of "cavernous death metal", often called "caverncore" when done poorly or in a cheap and derivative manner.

After a few demos and the "Entrantment of Evil" EP, Incantation release their debut and death metal's greatest masterpiece: Onward to Golgotha.

Onward to Golgotha is to death metal what Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is to black metal, the pinnacle, the apex. There is nowhere higher left to go.

The line-up for that album is simply legendary: Craig Pillard on vocals and guitars, Ronny Deo on bass, Jim Roe on drums, and John McEntee on backing guitars.

Important to note is the absence of Incantation founder Paul Ledney, who had gone on to form black metal bands Havohej and Profanatica.

Onward to Golgotha is the peak of blackened death metal, and Incantation are clearly its kings.
