Sôl Austan, Mâni Vestan is the tenth full-length studio album by the black metal solo project Burzum.
Unlike its predecessor Umskiptar and the other two albums released once out of prison, Sôl Austan, Mâni Vestan marks a return to the form of ambient music he recorded while in prison, particularly on the Hliðskjálf album.
Sôl austan, Mâni vestan is Old Icelandic for "East of the sun, West of the moon". All the song titles are thus in Old Icelandic.
According to Varg Vikernes, Sôl austan, Mâni vestan is a concept album about a "descent into darkness and the following ascend back into the light; the Pagan initiation, the elevation of man to the divine, the enlightenment of the mind, the feeding of the elven light in man".
Sôl austan, Mâni vestan is inspired by and produced for the "ForeBears" movie by Varg Vikernes and Marie Cachet, where much of the Scaldic music from this album appears on, only in unmastered form, as a soundtrack.
The artwork represents the painting titled "Rape of Proserpina" by the Spanish artist Ulpiano Checa.
