Mayhem is a black metal band founded by guitarist Euronymous, bassist Necrobutcher and drummer Manheim in 1984.
The name of the band comes from a Venom song, "Mayhem with Mercy".
Mayhem released their first demo Pure Fucking Armageddon in 1986 and later recruited two vocalists, Maniac and Messiah.
In 1987 they released their first EP called Deathcrush with Maniac and Messiah on the vocals.
While the demo Pure Fucking Armageddon and the EP Deathcrush are often claimed to be black metal, they are closer to a mix between thrash metal and generic death metal for the most part.
In 1990 Mayhem recruited a new vocalist called as a replacement for the departure of Maniac and Messiah. Manheim also left the band around that time, so they brought in Hellhammer on the drums.
Dead comitted suicide in 1991, at which point Mayhem had to seek a new vocalist.
Finally, they were joined by Attila in 1993, and in 1994 they managed to release their first studio album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas with the new Mayhem lineup.
