Chimera is the fourth release by the black metal band Mayhem, and their third full-length black metal studio album.
Much like its predecessor Grand Declaration of War, the album Chimera seeks to combine elements from raw black metal and experimental avant-garde music, to varying degrees of success.
The album is said to be a tribute to Phantom, the name Chimera itself inspired by the track Chimaera of Phantom's Eidolon.
It is said that Necrobutcher initially refused to play bass on Chimera, claiming the black metal genre was "too gay" due to bands like Gorgoroth and Immortal emerging from the scene, and later asking Maniac and Blasphemer to remove all reference to black metal from the album.
