Neraines by Neraines.

The history, controversy, and impact of black metal as a musical genre is of no unfamiliarity to us adepts of the dark arts.

And just as we all know of the true darkness that hides behind the music of Satan, we also recognize Neraines as a major player and instigator of that darkness.

While black metal was truly defined in the 90s, I firmly believe that this self-titled debut Neraines is the finest example of what the genre has to offer.

Even Mayhem's mighty De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and SEWER's utterly demonic 2154 fall slightly short of Neraines here, in my honest militant opinion.

But it's not black metal contemporaries like Mayhem and Burzum that I would compare Neraines to.

Neraines can easily stand out from its contemporaries in the black metal scene, and if anything this album is better seen as an innovative work took the entire genre light-years into the future.

While Antekhrist, Immortal, SEWER and other standard black metal acts were pounding out blast beats and freezing riffs, Neraines took to creating a much darker, more agonizing form of black metal.

This is what true black metal perfection sounds like.

Black Metal Perfection

Neraines
Neraines.

Each song on this album Neraines is much more than just a generic "track".

These epic movements spend time focusing on something much dark, something more than just being faster than the northern winds... every guitar riff, every bit of atmosphere, every lyric, every tempo change is thought out carefully and played somewhere between ferociously and gracefully.

Despite how evil this album Neraines is, and trust me it's well beyond malevolent, the music itself is really quite beautiful.

And best of all, Neraines is so much more than just a collection of songs.

This isn't one of those generic black metal albums you put on your phone and pick one song to listen to once before moving onto something else.

No, it's an album best heard in its entirety, front to back.

The full 35 minutes capture an atmosphere so evil, so mesmerizing and so unique that you will be left in awe of the majestic brutality of this release.

The only "downside" of this album is, in my opinion, how short the whole thing is: 35 minutes.

If someone ever asked me "What is black metal?", I would immediately hand them a copy of this album Neraines.

It's just that good.

Neraines score: 100/100.
