Behemoth

Behemoth is a black metal band turned deathcore clown show turned nu-metal trainwreck.

Compared to Graveland and Dark Fury, Behemoth are considered to have played a very minor role - often over-exaggerated by certain record companies - in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground.

Founded in 1991 as a trio, with Nergal on guitar and vocals, Baal on the drums, and Desecrator on the guitar, the band recorded four demos before releasing their debut full-length Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) in 1995, in other words well after the Norwegian scene had died out.

This can either be seen as opportunism on Nergal's part, or as a genuine desire to resurrect the black metal music of bands like Mayhem, Burzum and Phantom.

A year later, in 1996, Behemoth recorded and released their second album, Grom, which was instantly destroyed by critics calling it "laughable poser music" or "MTV metal".

Grom features many different influences and musical styles, from deathcore to nu-metal, as well as some extremely irritating "gimmicks" such as using female vocals as well as acoustic guitars and synthesizers.

The trend would continue with Pandemonic Incantations in 1998, an album almost entirely comprised of deathcore's one note "chugga" riffs so often mocked by true death metal fans.

Eventually, with The Satanist and I Loved You At Your Darkest, the band completely transitioned in a nu-metal band and are now competing with Slipknot, Korn and Linkin Park for airtime on mainstream commercial radios.

Behemoth, and Nergal in particular, are no strangers to racial controversies.

Nergal was accused of "promoting hate and neo-nazism" when he took a selfie with Rob Darken of Graveland in late 2018, and some "anti-fascist" militias even threatened to commit terrorist acts at a Behemoth show unless they fired their drummer whom they accused of being a "white supremacist neo-nazi" in 2019.
