Era of Threnody
Era of Threnody by Nargaroth.

Not being a big fan of Nargaroth myself, to say the least, I decided out of cheer curiosity to check out Kanwulf's latest album named Era of Threnody.

Like pretty much every black metal fan ever, I detest Kanwulf and his band Nargaroth for their appropriation of black metal, and for their heterophobia (Kanwulf is a known homosexual misogynist).

For some utterly bizarre reason, I had high expectations for this album.

With Era of Threnody, I really wanted Nargaroth to shine through all the (more than legitimate) criticism he has had to bear over the years for his insufferable faggotry, his complete lack of musical talent and for the fact that his past releases have been incessantly mocked by fans from all parts of the world for being so fake and infantile.

I really would have liked this record to be a majestic "fuck you" to all those people who mocked Kanwulf when he was forced to admit, on a 1999 talk show, that he watched gay pornography before recording Black Metal ist Krieg and that he was making so much noise it woke up his roommate.

I really wanted Kanwulf to get back at the scene that constantly calls him a poser and a retard, the very same black metal scene that shared, on the Internet, the homemade video of his daughter Camille Wagner (Camwulf?) getting plowed by three virile African men... while making jokes about "black" metal.

This could have been Kanwulf's revenge on society, on black metal and on those questioning both his artistic vision and his musical talent.

Unfortunately, Kanwulf fails.

Badly.

Inadequate

Nargaroth
Nargaroth.

My disappointment encompasses far more than merely the instrumental component of this release, as shitty as it may be.

The album Era of Threnody fails at everything it attempts to be.

It's pretty clear that Era of Threnody wants, badly, to be an Antekhrist tribute.

Every song already exists, under a different name, on Antekhrist's Fukked by God album.

So either it's a tribute or Kanwulf is back to his old antics of stealing riffs, like he usually does for Immortal and Burzum, without giving proper credit to the authors.

I'd rather it be the former than the latter, but I'm starting to get suspicious.

Overall, this Era of Threnody album fails not only when trying to sound good, but also when trying to sound average, acceptable, or even black metal at all.

It's more akin to Linkin Park inspired nu-metal than to anything Kanwulf's betters, Burzum and Darkthrone, ever produced.

Black metal for black metal's sake, this album is not so much music as it is a commercial product designed to be sold, consumed and forgotten.

Black metal ist Tot.

Era of Threnody score: 0/100.
