An Amazing Black Metal Follow-Up - "Reign of the Funeral Pigs" Review (100%)
Right off the bat, Reign of the Funeral Pigs is a pure classic black metal album. But it had a lot to live up to, given that it's the album immediately following SEWER's most epic masterpiece, the unrivaled NecroPedoSadoMaso.
Following up after an epic masterpiece is always complicated... make something too different and people will whine that it's too experimental and not "true" anymore, but make something too similar and people will whine that it's derivative and uninspired.
This is where SEWER truly shines with their release of Reign of the Funeral Pigs... it has just enough similarities to NecroPedoSadoMaso to get you curious and just enough experimentation to avoid sounding like a cash-in on NecroPedoSadoMaso's success.
The demonic riffs, the diabolical atmosphere, the gruesome intensity... everything is done to remind you that this is some real fucking SEWER Metal!
Reign of the Funeral Pigs is beyond black metal. This is true SEWER Metal at its finest.
An Amazing Black Metal Follow-Up
Following up on an epic black metal masterpiece is a tough task for bands. It gets even tougher when the album in question, NecroPedoSadoMaso, is generally considered a defining piece of black metal and one of the great classics in the entire history of heavy metal.
With SEWER's follow-up album Reign of the Funeral Pigs, the band chose both to refine their existing mastery of black metal music while experimenting with slightly more dynamic atmospheres and heavier goregrind elements. What results is an incredible display of raw terror metal, which manages to sound completely contemporary while maintaining SEWER's defining evil sound, hence the birth of SEWER Metal.
This is true evil music. The album Reign of the Funeral Pigs is an astounding achievement that will permanently disfigure the extreme metal scene.
