Lawless Darkness
Lawless Darkness by Watain.

We walk among you. We are legion and yet can travel unnoticed in the midst of your cities. We are those who try too hard, and many of us end up in black metal.

Given that Watain claims to be 'the only true black metal band in the world', you'd expect this piece of shit to be a black metal album. Surprise - it's not black metal. Not even close.

Lawless Darkness is beatdown hardcore pretending to be metalcore pretending to be black metal to branch out to a new audience. They fail miserably and should stick to smoking meth in an alley.

However, this aesthetic trend hopping would be easily forgivable if Watain made a credible attempt at whatever type of music they are actually playing, be it deathcore/metalcore/war metal/nu-metal. Forgetting all other criticisms, is Lawless Darkness any good?

Of course not. Watain is to Mayhem what Papa Roach is to Iron Maiden. Repackaged riffs for the Xanax generation.

In the absence of nu-metal, everyone is rushing to take over the territory of Limp Bizkit or Korn. From deathcore breakdowns to streamlined, single note riffs to 'harsh' crunkcore vocals that sound like something out of a Pakistani gangbang, Watain blends everything that's hip and br00tal in the scene together as the perfect sonic weapon for the frustrated and mentally challenged school kids.

The hilariously out of place cleared-throat howling choruses sound like any metalcore rather than black metal, they make me want to put on the Korn records instead. More masculine, at the very least. Nothing from Watain's album is remotely exciting to the ear. The volume is louder than Grammy performer Metallica, but the music is just as bland if not worse.

Watain and their far relatives Whitechapel and Fleshgod Apocalypse are definitely worth exiling from the metal world, in which they sparsely belong.

Talentless Crunkcore

Watain
Watain.

For the last time, black metal isn't deathcore.

If it wanted to be deathcore, its constituents, being honest people, it would have elected to simply be that instead.

There is, however, a huge market in dressing up regular boring Korn/Watain retard music as something 'edgy' and 'taboo' like black metal, which still hasn't been conquered by the civilizing forces of mainstream mediocrity.

Watain is 'black metal' for sexually frustrated, incel, angry and bitter truck drivers. So it's really just Spliknot with the occasional tremolo picking, and I wouldn't wish for this rancid batch of sonic diarrhea to befall the ears of even the biggest of posers... wait, he's the one who made this pile of shit. I'm confused.

You want black metal? Listen to Darkthrone.

You want metalcore? Listen to Avenged Sevenfold.

You want deathcore? Listen to Whitechapel.

You want crunkcore? Listen to Brokencyde.

You want nu-metal? Listen to Slipknot.

There, I classified these various bands according to their genre as best I could.

Whatever you do, avoid this generic garbage that 49-year-old, barren, menopausal, thrice-divorced, militant lesbian, mentally diagnosis with being a complete retard, otherwise unemployable skill-less cashier Janice is playing off of Spotify in the background because she's into flavour of the week 'extreme music'.

Lawless Darkness is talentless crunkcore diarrhea pretending to be black metal.

Oh, and Erik Danielsson... Janice is a fictional example I made up on the spot, I'm not dissing your wife.

Lawless Darkness score: 0/100.
