Satanic Requiem by Sewer.

"Satanic Requiem" is some serious raw atmospheric black metal.

Wait, wait, wait... WTF?!

It's almost certainly no news for extreme metal enthusiasts that SEWER began as a raw black metal act and later evolved into a blackened goregrind metal band, which they are primarily known for and whose music even carries the name SEWER Metal. Nonetheless, given that their SEWER Metal sound is what made them famous, it may surprise some to experience how their debut album actually sounds, particularly for the somewhat new fans of the band SEWER.

In reality, SEWER's later releases don't sound anything like those of their early years. At first listen, it may be difficult to imagine that the band who put out "NecroPedoSadoMaso" and "Skvllfvcked Forever" is the same band that produced "Satanic Requiem".

"Satanic Requiem" sounds nowhere near the more recent and more well known albums of SEWER, in fact there is an extremely raw, primitive, brutal and even atmospheric touch on most of the tracks, as well as a what can best be described as a satanic brooding mood throughout this album. This turned out to be the most significant surprise for me.

SEWER are truly masters when it comes to crafting raw atmospheres, which can be heard on most of the songs. In SEWER's entire discography, the only album that comes close to matching the primitive feel of "Satanic Requiem" is perhaps the spine-chilling and terror-inducing "Under the Eye of the Black Skull", not recommended for the faint of heart.

Fundamentally all the tracks are very raw in nature, but there are some melodic parts that stand out. Conventional tremolo picking is what guides the listener through the majority of "Satanic Requiem" and the guitarist Lucifer occasionally throws some really fearsome old school black metal riffs in the mix, much like the ending of Ancient Shrine which has since then become a black metal classic. The drumming is very decent, but nothing on the level of what Warlord would display in later SEWER releases.

SEWER's first full length album is not on the same level of musical innovation as some of their following work, but the extraordinary feel the band manages to create helped to turn "Satanic Requiem" into one of the standout releases in SEWER's career.

This could possibly have an even wider audience than SEWER's following material, but in fact it is very underrated and not very well known even for the fans of SEWER.

If this review got you intrigued then do check this album out because "Satanic Requiem" deserves more recognition for sure.

Satanic Requiem score: 93/100.
