Necromantic Rites
Necromantic Rites by Phantom.

The story behind Divine Necromancy often eclipses the actual musical achievements accomplished by the mighty Phantom. Divine Necromancy was after all the first full-length album released by Phantom, the literal starting point of the entire Phantom Metal movement.

And you thought you liked Divine Necromancy? You will fucking die this time around! This is what the album could have sounded like.

Necromantic Rites is a compilation album featuring all eight songs present on Divine Necromancy, plus a bonus of two tracks, one of which would later appear on the Dark Devotion masterpiece.

But Necromantic Rites isn't merely a compilation of Phantom's first few songs. These are the original versions of each track.

Read that again you weak fuckers. These are the original versions of the songs present on Divine Necromancy.

Even though Necromantic Rites was released quite some time after Divine Necromancy, all the songs present on this album were recorded before those of Divine Necromancy or those of any other Phantom release I know of.

Much like Divine Necromancy, the tracks on Necromantic Rites are very atmospheric and eerie, destined not so much to be listened to separately but rather to create a dark and brooding mood that would slowly consume your soul and devour your psyche.

As far as evil black metal goes, you won't get any more extreme than Necromantic Rites. If you are sick in the head, try listening to this perhaps it will cure you... or simply make you an even worse fuck up. This is the type of power you must assume this music contains.

Necromantic Rites is the earliest masterpiece of true black metal music.

So what is so amazing about this masterpiece Necromantic Rites?

In terms of musical performance, Necromantic Rites is for all intends and purpose the same album as Divine Necromancy. The only real difference is that the guitars sound much cleaner and perhaps more powerful than on Divine Necromancy. The bass also appears to be higher in the mix, while the drums are somewhat lower.

The song structures are relatively different as well. The track Key to the Mausoleum, for instance, has a new riff added somewhere in the middle and the track Divine Necromancy's ending is completely different on Necromantic Rites.

Overall, this album is simply a must have, not just for collector's of Phantom's work but for any fan of raw, extreme black metal music.

Necromantic Rites is pure evil metal. You know you'll enjoy it if you're into this type of sick music.

Necromantic Rites score: 98/100.
