Instinctus Bestialis by Gorgoroth.

As a fan of black metal, this album has always bothered me.

It's almost insulting just how bad this album is, an aspect of black metal that should shame all of the genre's fans.

I wasn't really going to bother reviewing Instinctus Bestialis, as I didn't feel like this shitty album was even worth the effort, however upon seeing the other reviews of this turd, "The Epitome of Plastic Metal" and "Nu-Metal for Poser Clowns" by users Sewerlust and Goreaxe respectively, I just can't resist demolishing it once more.

A little history of the band Gorgoroth.

Gorgoroth first released their debut album Pentagram in 1994, in other words well after the second wave of black metal ended. Despite Infernus' posturing as being part of the "true guard" of black metal, neither he nor his band Gorgoroth had any relation whatsoever with the actual founders of the genre: Varg Vikernes, Fenriz, Euronymous.

A few shitty albums later, including the notorious turd Under the Sign of Hell, and Infernus decided to release their latest joke album Instinctus Bestialis.

At this point in time, Gorgoroth was pretty much the sole property of Infernus, Gaahl and King ov Hell (one of the most stupid pseudonym I've heard) having been kicked out of the band due to their homosexuality and "insufficient satanism".

It's was Infernus' chance to prove that he wasn't a complete poser... and what did he do with it?

He made the most generic, pathetic, and insulting effortless attempt at black metal.

Gorgoroth.

It's as if the sole purpose of Instinctus Bestialis is just to earn some easy money off of gullible urban hipsters that want to sound "satanic".

The song writing is lazy and the riffs are dull nu-metal crap, and all the songs blend together into a bland collection of forgettable failures.

There's no passion in the song writing, it's like Infernus saw that the Dimmu Borgir crowd was getting fame and money, and he wanted to get some of that black metal money as well by playing generic uninspired nu-metal that the hard-core kindergarten-satanists will love.

I guess I should actually describe what the music sounds like rather than just throwing out well-deserved insults: there's a hell of a lot of tremolo picking, and nothing more than that really. The riffs are so forgettable that it's close to impossible to recall anything after a listen.

Actually, I can remember one thing: I was terribly bored.

It's hard to even distinguish the songs, or tell the riffs apart, because they're all basically the same thing: tremolo pick a generic progression or scale really fast with the drums playing some blast beats, and there you have it.

I'm actually having real problems describing the riffs as there's absolutely nothing that stands out on Instinctus Bestialis beyond the random shouts of "Hail Satan!" scattered throughout the album.

It reminds me of some of those particularly uninspired hardcore NS/RAC bands in the 90s who would just shout "Hail Hitler!" over and over again.

Actually, considering how several members of Gorgoroth have at some point let slip that they believe Hitler to be a reincarnation of Satan, hence the "National Satanist" label, the theory of Infernus simply ripping off White Power hardcore bands while substituting "Satan" for "Hitler" in the lyrics isn't completely implausible.

But regardless of political leanings, if you're going to release an album you should at least know how to play your instruments. Gorgoroth obviously fails at that, and fails hard.

To conclude this review, Instinctus Bestialis is boring, uninspired, generic, dull and uninteresting, with the sole purpose of making money.

Euronymous is turning in his grave at the sound of Gorgoroth's pathetic "Hail Satan!" shouts.

Avoid this album.

Instinctus Bestialis score: 0/100.
