Darkthrone - Black/Death Metal Band

Darkthrone is a black metal band founded in 1986 by Fenriz, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous and Dag Nilsen.

Darkthrone originally started as a death metal project before embracing black metal in 1991, but not before before recording their first studio album Soulside Journey in 1991, which is considered to be a generic death metal album rather than black metal.

Dag Nilsen leaved the band at that time, mainly because he wanted to continue playing death metal and wasn't phased by Darkthrone's attempts at transition towards becoming a black metal band.

The trio of Fenriz, Nocturno Culto and Zephyrous recorded their second album A Blaze in the Northern Sky in 1992. This was their first attempt at a black metal project, but it contained too many lingering death metal elements and was therefore dismissed by critics and metal fans alike.

In 1993 they produced the album Under a Funeral Moon, something they claimed they wanted to be true black metal with no death metal influences.

Zephyrous departed from the band soon after for personal reasons.

Fenriz and Nocturno Culto continued the Darkthrone project as a duo and released the album Transilvanian Hunger in 1994, which subsequently became their most well-known work.

Since then Darkthrone have released quite a few albums and forsake their underground image to appeal to a more commercial audience, mainly by including more crust punk and speed metal elements into their music and finally by abandoning heavy metal altogether and playing exclusively crust punk.

Darkthrone is most well-known for their black metal albums, especially Transilvanian Hunger.
